Why does the African Union want to ditch the world’s most popular map?
The African Union has endorsed the ‘Correct the Map’ campaign to abandon the 16th-century Mercator projection, long criticised for shrinking Africa’s true size. Advocates argue that adopting the Equal Earth projection would correct global misperceptions, boost dignity and pride, and reshape how the continent is viewed in world affairs
