Author Elif Shafak, once put on trial for ‘insulting Turkishness’, warns of crackdown on free speech
In 2006, Elif Shafak was charged with "insulting Turkishness" after the release of her book The Bastard of Istanbul. Speaking with Richard and Yalda on The World podcast, she warns she sees parallels between Turkey and the US – and worries that free speech in the West is under threat.
