Excavations begin at Irish mass grave believed to hold the remains of hundreds of babies

Excavations began Monday at an unmarked mass grave at the site of an institution for unmarried mothers in western Ireland. The scheduled two-year investigation that will attempt to identify the lost children is taking place 11 years after a local amateur historian uncovered evidence that up to 796 babies and small children had died there.
