Excavations began Monday at an unmarked mass grave at the site of an institution for unmarried mothers in western Ireland. The scheduled two-year investigation that will attempt to identify the lost children is taking place 11 years after a local amateur historian uncovered evidence that up to 796 babies and small children had died there.
